Ballina is Mayo’s largest town with a population of approximately 8,500
which acts as a gateway to North Mayo and West Sligo. The town is built
along the River Moy, one of the best salmon fishing rivers in Europe.
Ballina has many wonderful attractions such as the ruins of the Moyne Abbey,
the Rossery Friary and St. Murdeach’s Cathedral which stands on the banks of
the River Moy.

St. Muredach's Cathedral
St. Muredach's Cathedral
is the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Killala. Work on the
Cathedral began in 1827. The stone was quarried locally and the roof and
ceiling were completed before the Great Famine of 1845. The spire was
completed in 1855 and by 1875 the organ had been installed. |

Ballina was founded in 1723 by Lord Tyrawley but there is no doubt that the
settlement on the banks of the Moy existed long before the early 18th
century.
The original name of the town was Belleek or in Irish, Beal Athà an Fheàda,
and today there is still a part of Ballina called Belleek along with Belleek
woods.
Historically, Ballina developed as a Market Town, serving the relatively
populous and industrious farming hinterland of North Mayo/ West Sligo. It is
the traditional trading centre for a region extending from Blacksod in the
West, Eastwards to Swinford and North to Dromore West/ Skreen.
